NOAA Fisheries released Q2 2018 updates on their Fish Stock Sustainability Index (FSSI) scores for the following stocks:
- Chinook Salmon - Klamath River Fall Run (score change from 4 to 2)
- Chinook Salmon - Sacramento River Fall Run (score change from 4 to 2)
Based on average landings of sockeye salmon from 2014-2016 and using the most recent 2013-2017 MSC certifications, the sustainability breakdown of sockeye salmon is as follows:
- ~75% of global sockeye salmon is MSC-certified (100% of Alaska and Canada, and ~10% of Russia landings)
- <1% of global sockeye salmon meet a Seafood Watch"Good Alternative (yellow)" from U.S. West Coast (nearly all from Puget Sound, Washington)
- ~25% of global sockeye salmon is unrated (Russia and Japan)
- Global landings of sockeye salmon decreased ~1% from 2014-2016
In May 2017, the Prince William Sound salmon fisheries were added to the MSC certificate for Alaska salmon, making all salmon fisheries in the state of Alaska certified.
